Russia Launches Massive Missile Strikes Across Ukraine, Killing at Least Eight

Russia launched a coordinated wave of ballistic missiles and drone attacks across Ukraine, resulting in at least eight deaths and dozens of injuries across multiple cities. The assault struck the capital Kyiv, Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, and the western city of Lviv near the Polish border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had publicly warned citizens of an imminent "massive attack" hours before the strikes began.

Scale of the Assault

Air raid sirens sounded across most of Ukraine overnight as explosions echoed through populated areas. In Kryvyi Rih, a direct strike from an Iskander-M ballistic missile launched from Voronezh destroyed a private residence, killing six people including girls aged five and 12, according to military administration head Oleksandr Vilkul. Eight additional residents were injured in the same attack, with authorities warning the death toll could still rise.

Kyiv's military administration confirmed at least one fatality in the capital, where falling debris ignited fires across multiple districts in the Sviatoshynskyi and Obolon areas. Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned residents to remain in shelters as attacks continued. In Lviv, preliminary reports indicated damage to two apartment buildings with at least six people injured.

International Response

Poland, which borders Ukraine to the west, scrambled fighter jets and activated ground-based air defence systems in response to the strikes. The Polish armed forces statement confirmed that fighter aircraft and early warning systems were deployed to protect Polish airspace as a protective measure.

Russia's defence ministry claimed its forces targeted military facilities across Ukraine and struck three cargo vessels near the Black Sea city of Odesa, which the ministry accused of transporting weapons and military equipment. Ukrainian officials have not confirmed these assessments.

Call for Military Aid

Zelenskyy intensified appeals to Western allies for air defence support, emphasizing that civilian protection depends directly on the provision of additional missiles. He reiterated that Ukraine urgently requires air defence systems currently in short supply. The Ukrainian president recently returned from the United States, where he stated that President Donald Trump had agreed to grant Ukraine licences to produce Patriot interceptor missiles.
