Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra Lineup Shifts to Four-Model Strategy with Enhanced Cameras and New Battery Technology

Samsung is restructuring its flagship smartphone lineup with the Galaxy S27 series, introducing a four-model strategy that includes a new "Galaxy S27 Pro" tier positioned between standard and Ultra variants. The devices will feature upgraded camera sensors, a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, and silicon-carbon battery technology previously exclusive to the company's foldable phones.

New Four-Device Lineup Strategy

Import and export data reveals Samsung's next non-folding flagship will consist of four distinct models instead of the traditional three-tier approach. The lineup splits into two base devices and two premium flagships, mirroring Apple's iPhone organizational structure. These devices carry internal codenames "NM1" through "NM4"—standing for "Next Miracle"—with NM1 representing the standard Galaxy S27, NM2 the S27+, NM3 the S27 Pro, and NM4 the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

The S27 Pro emerges as Samsung's answer to Apple's iPhone Pro, positioned as a higher-tier device than the Plus model but without certain Ultra exclusives like the S Pen stylus support. This new tier aims to capture consumers seeking premium features without committing to the top-end Ultra configuration.

Camera System Overhaul

Samsung is implementing significant camera improvements across the series. The standard S27 and S27+ will receive a new primary 50-megapixel sensor from Sony, upgrading their core imaging capability. Both the Pro and Ultra variants will share a redesigned 50-megapixel ultrawide camera equipped with Sony's IMX855 sensor, a 1/2.55-inch type specification.

The telephoto configurations differ between Pro and Ultra models. The S27 Pro will include one zoom camera, while the S27 Ultra reportedly features two separate telephoto lenses, providing greater zoom versatility and flexibility. Additionally, both Pro and Ultra models will feature a 16-megapixel selfie camera with autofocus capabilities, with the Pro variant potentially receiving optical image stabilization on its front-facing sensor.

Battery and Technology Updates

Samsung plans to incorporate silicon-carbon battery technology into the Galaxy S27 series, a material chemistry the company first introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 foldable devices. While specific capacity figures remain undisclosed, reports indicate the upgrade will not deliver a dramatic increase in overall battery size. The silicon-carbon implementation may not extend uniformly across all four models due to manufacturing cost considerations, potentially limiting the technology to higher-tier variants.

The company's Privacy Display technology, another recent advancement, similarly faces limited rollout and is not expected to expand beyond the top-tier Ultra model in this generation.

Samsung is scheduled to launch the Galaxy S27 series in early 2027, providing nearly a year of development and refinement following the company's current Z-series foldable launch.
