Scientists discovered a thriving coral reef off Benin's coast that had been presumed dead for over 60 years.

A coral reef presumed dead since the 1960s has been discovered alive and teeming with marine life off the coast of Benin, marking the first confirmed record of a living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea continental shelf. Using underwater drone technology and the Deep Sea Camera System, researchers documented the thriving ecosystem at depths exceeding 50 meters, revealing an abundance of fish species and coral types previously unknown to exist in the region.

The Six-Decade Gap
During marine surveys in the early 1960s, scientists detected what appeared to be coral formations at depths between 52 and 56 meters off Benin's coast. However, the technology available at the time—primitive sonar and dredging equipment—led researchers to conclude the structures were dead. For six decades, no follow-up investigation occurred, leaving the potential reef unmapped and unstudied.
The research team, led by oceanographer Gérard Zinzindohoué of the Institut de Recherches Halieutiques et Océanologiques du Bénin, used those archival records as a starting point. Researchers scanned approximately 7.1 miles of seabed with modern sonar technology and identified two promising signals worth investigating with advanced underwater equipment.
What They Found
Footage captured by the underwater drone revealed a healthy mesophotic coral ecosystem—a deeper, lower-light habitat that exists in patches rather than as one continuous reef. The site hosts eight fish species and eight coral types, including golden African snappers, blackbar soldierfish, Guinean angelfish, West African goatfish, the Monrovia doctorfish, three-banded butterflyfish, and two damselfish species.
Mesophotic reefs, sometimes called the ocean's "twilight reefs," inhabit zones where sunlight penetrates just enough to support coral growth. These ecosystems have attracted increasing scientific interest because they often harbor species distinct from shallow reefs, may serve as refuges from warming surface waters, and remain among Earth's least explored marine environments.
