The Scrubs cast revival is reshaping its lineup for season 2, with intern character Sam Tosh receiving a permanent upgrade while two recurring roles have been eliminated from the ensemble. Original leads Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke remain at the core of the show, which continues production in Vancouver for the network's flagship medical comedy revival.

Cast Promotions and Departures

Ava Bunn, who portrayed the wide-eyed intern Dr. Sam Tosh in the revival's inaugural season, has been elevated to series regular status heading into the second installment. The decision reflects the character's strong reception alongside the core trio, who have managed the transition from their original interns to senior physicians overseeing the next generation.

However, the season brings losses as well. Joel Kim Booster, who played Dr. Kevin Park, and X Mayo, who portrayed Charge Nurse Raymond, will not return for the new season. Both characters appeared as recurring elements during the first revival run, but the production has opted not to continue their storylines.

Expanded Roles for Original Cast Members

Neil Flynn, who portrayed the iconic Janitor character across the original series, will receive expanded screen time in season 2. Flynn appeared only briefly in the season 1 finale but will recur throughout the new episodes. Similarly, Rachel Bilson, who guest-starred in the season 1 finale as hospital visitor Charlie, will feature in a multi-episode arc exploring her character's connection with lead physician J.D., played by Braff.

Original ensemble members John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes return in recurring roles, though their availability remains limited due to simultaneous commitments to other projects. McGinley stars in HBO's Rooster, while Reyes appears in ABC's High Potential, requiring scheduling coordination to bring both actors to Vancouver for filming.

Showrunner Aseem Batra previously indicated that the revival intentionally balances focus between the established physicians and the new intern generation. The character development extends beyond hospital settings, with Batra noting the audience's interest in personal storylines alongside medical drama.
