The Incident
During an appearance on The Person Who Believed In Me podcast hosted by David Begnaud, Stone described a pivotal moment from 2001 when she discovered multiple "gigantic" tumors in her breasts. One tumor was larger than her entire left breast. After a physician visited her home to recommend a bilateral mastectomy, Stone made the decision to proceed with the surgery as a precautionary measure.
Her ex-husband objected to the decision. According to Stone's account, when she informed him of her choice, he called the decision "ridiculous" and left the room. The actor emphasized that she was prepared to make autonomous health choices, stating firmly that she would make her own medical decisions. The doctor intervened, telling Stone's then-husband, "If I had more patients like her, we'd have more women alive today. You need to sit down."
Stone ultimately did not undergo the bilateral mastectomy. After further testing, she learned that the tumors were benign and underwent surgery only to have them removed. The marriage between Stone and her ex-husband—journalist Phil Bronstein, whom she married in 1998—ended in 2004. Stone was previously married to television producer Michael Greenburg from 1984 to 1990.
A Broader Pattern Emerges
Stone's account has resonated with numerous women who have experienced similar circumstances. Social media responses revealed a troubling pattern of partners abandoning or withdrawing support from women undergoing medical procedures. Users shared experiences of spouses leaving after cancer diagnoses, refusing to provide care during recovery from surgeries, and even abandoning partners after procedures that altered their physical appearance. One commenter noted that women diagnosed with cancer in certain areas receive pamphlets warning about the risk of spousal abandonment. Another described a partner who "ghosted" after 12 years together while she was recovering from a spinal cord injury, with the partner telling her mother the situation was "too hard for him."
Stone's memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice, published in 2021, first documented her health scare from that period. The podcast discussion has amplified the conversation about women's bodily autonomy and the consequences some face when exercising control over their own medical care.
