Situational Awareness Hedge Fund Seeks Fresh Capital After AI Stock Selloff
Leopold Aschenbrenner's $20 billion Situational Awareness hedge fund has approached investors for additional capital following sharp losses.

Situational Awareness, a $20 billion hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has contacted investors and lenders to secure additional capital following losses tied to a sector-wide decline in artificial intelligence and semiconductor equities. The fund's portfolio has been significantly impacted by recent weakness across companies including Nvidia, Oracle, Broadcom, and Advanced Micro Devices. According to reports, discussions with existing investors include the option to purchase assets directly from the fund's portfolio.
Portfolio Pressure and Market Conditions
Aschenbrenner established the AI-focused fund in 2024 immediately after departing OpenAI, constructing his investment thesis around high-conviction positions in artificial intelligence infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturers, and data center operators. The fund's latest regulatory filing revealed approximately 42 disclosed holdings valued at roughly $13.68 billion, excluding cash and other assets. Core holdings anchor the portfolio in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF, Nvidia, Oracle, Broadcom, and AMD, alongside infrastructure-focused companies such as CoreWeave, Core Scientific, Bloom Energy, and Applied Digital.
The recent market downturn has disproportionately affected certain positions. SanDisk has experienced declines exceeding 55 percent over the past month, though the stock showed strength in pre-market trading. Nebius Group, a Nvidia-backed infrastructure company, has fallen more than 46 percent despite rising in early trading sessions. The broader pullback across semiconductor and AI infrastructure stocks has created pressure on the fund's portfolio performance.
Capital Raising Strategy
Sources familiar with discussions described the capital-raising process as "ad-hoc" rather than a formal fundraising campaign. The approach differs from traditional institutional fundraising, allowing existing investors flexibility in how they participate. This structure suggests the fund is managing liquidity concerns while maintaining operational continuity despite the challenging market environment for technology and semiconductor investments.
