Sydney Teacher Loses Arm in Great White Shark Attack at Coogee Beach

A 34-year-old Sydney primary school teacher and dedicated ocean swimmer remains in critical condition at St Vincent's Hospital following a great white shark attack at Coogee Beach. Leah Stewart lost her arm in the mauling and sustained additional injuries to her legs and body, with her family preparing for extended specialist medical care, including prosthetics and rehabilitation.

The incident occurred on a clear Saturday morning when Stewart was swimming between the safety flags near the shoreline. A suspected 3.5-metre great white shark attacked her in the shallow water. Off-duty volunteer lifeguard Charlie Verco, aged 24, paddled directly into the bloodied water to retrieve the unconscious teacher on his board. Upon reaching shore, surf life savers and members of the public immediately applied tourniquets and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, actions that proved critical to her survival.

Stewart's older brother Joshua told media outlets that the family remains uncertain about the full extent of her injuries. Medical staff have successfully managed her extreme blood loss, but serious damage across multiple body systems remains under assessment. The family launched a GoFundMe campaign to prepare for predicted specialised medical expenses over an extended period. Joshua described the circumstances as "tragic and horrific," emphasising that his sister "did all the right things" by swimming in the designated safe area.

A week following the attack, more than 1,000 community members gathered at Coogee Beach for a swim-out organised by Randwick City Council and the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club to demonstrate support for Stewart and her family. The family's letter, read aloud at the event, thanked first responders and the medical team. It noted that Stewart, described as "a survivor," draws strength from the love surrounding her. Her 18-month-old daughter remained cared for by family members while Stewart recovers in hospital.
