T-Mobile's chief executive dismissed satellite internet as inferior to the carrier's 5G fixed wireless home broadband service, arguing that fiber-like speeds and lower latency give wireless access a decisive edge in underserved markets. The carrier, which currently partners with SpaceX on satellite phone connectivity, views its fixed wireless access (FWA) technology as the superior solution for last-mile broadband delivery across rural and urban areas alike.

Performance Comparison

T-Mobile's fixed wireless service delivers download speeds ranging from 90 to 500 megabits per second depending on network conditions and plan selection, according to real-world testing data. By contrast, Starlink satellite service typically achieves median download speeds near 120 megabits per second, with advertised ranges between 100 and 300 megabits per second. SpaceX has announced plans to upgrade its satellite constellation to gigabit-speed capacity, though those upgrades remain under development.

The critical advantage favoring fixed wireless stems from fundamental technical differences. T-Mobile's FWA uses excess 5G spectrum capacity to transmit signals directly from ground towers into customer homes, avoiding the physics limitations of low-Earth orbit satellites. Satellite services face inherent challenges including higher latency and network congestion, particularly in densely populated markets where subscriber density reaches saturation.
