Talarico Gains Ground on Paxton as Texas Senate Race Tightens Within Margin of Error
Democratic candidate James Talarico holds a four-point advantage over Republican Ken Paxton in a recent Texas Pulse poll.

A fourth consecutive poll shows Democratic candidate James Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race, with independent voters shifting decisively toward Talarico in recent weeks. The Texas Pulse survey released August 7, conducted by ReconMR in partnership with the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, found Talarico at 47 percent support compared to Paxton's 43 percent among likely voters, though the four-point advantage falls within the poll's 4.7-percentage-point margin of error.
Shifting Political Dynamics
The movement in the race has been driven primarily by changes among independent voters. According to ReconMR Senior Research Analyst Lindsey Hendren, independent voters now favor Talarico by 23 points—53 to 30 percent—a substantial shift from June when they supported him by only 14 points, 50 to 36 percent. This eight-point swing among unaffiliated voters reflects broader momentum for the Democratic candidate over a two-month period.
Favorability ratings have also moved in opposite directions. Paxton's unfavorable rating increased from 34-52 percent in June to 40-52 percent in the latest survey, indicating growing disapproval. Talarico's favorability improved slightly to 46-39 percent, up from 39-34 percent two months earlier.
Geographic Breakdown and Supporting Data
Regional performance shows distinct patterns. Talarico leads by substantial margins in Austin and the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area, while Paxton maintains significant support in rural Texas. The Houston and San Antonio regions remain closely divided. The Texas Pulse survey included 619 likely Texas voters and was conducted July 27-30.
Additional polling reinforces the competitive nature of the race. A Texas Southern University poll released August 4 showed Talarico at 47 percent and Paxton at 45 percent—a two-point lead within the poll's margin of error. A Fox News poll from July 30 gave Talarico a three-point advantage, 51 to 48 percent, while an earlier Texas Public Opinion Research survey from July 28 showed Talarico leading by five points, 45 to 40 percent.
