During his tenure, the program has failed to consistently reach 4 million viewers since the week ending March 30, when it averaged 4.2 million. Gutman's July performance—delivering 4.1 million average viewers during his first week in the anchor chair—represented the program's strongest showing in months and underscored a meaningful audience preference differential.

The ratings victory arrives as CBS News undergoes structural realignment under new leadership focused on editorial direction and personnel changes. Multiple senior producers and correspondents have departed the network's flagship programs, and several newsroom roles have been staffed with less experienced personnel. These organizational shifts coincide with mounting questions about the broadcast's editorial direction and competitive positioning in evening news.

Recent On-Air Challenges

Dokoupil's performance has been further complicated by high-profile production difficulties. During a three-hour Fourth of July primetime special broadcast from the National Mall marking America's 250th anniversary, severe weather forced the evacuation of the outdoor location where Dokoupil and co-anchor Nischelle Turner were stationed. The resulting broadcast saw anchors wait nearly an hour in rain without clear direction while studio-based colleagues managed airtime, and by the time the team relocated to CBS's Washington studio, approximately two-thirds of the special had already aired. Internal accounts described the coverage as problematic, though CBS News maintained that contingency protocols functioned as intended.
