Tropical Depression 2 has formed in the northern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha within 24 to 48 hours, bringing heavy rainfall and coastal storm surge to Florida's Panhandle region. The system currently maintains maximum sustained winds near 48 kilometers per hour with a central pressure of 1011 millibars, and is moving slowly toward the northwest at approximately 3 kilometers per hour.
Current Conditions and Movement
The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Florida's Panhandle coast, extending from the Ochlockonee River west to the Florida-Alabama border. The depression is tracking across the northeastern Gulf and is expected to move near or along the northern Gulf coast over the next several days. Steering currents remain weak, contributing to the system's slow northwestward progression, though forecasters anticipate the center will eventually turn westward as it approaches the upper Gulf coast.

Rainfall and Flood Threats
The primary hazard from Tropical Depression 2 will be heavy tropical rainfall across the northern Gulf coast and interior portions of Florida. Widespread rainfall totals of 5 to 10 centimeters are expected, with isolated areas receiving up to 20 centimeters. As the system remains offshore while tropical rainbands move inland, flash flooding is possible across the northeastern Gulf coast and western Florida Peninsula as moisture spreads away from the center.
Storm Surge and Wind Impact
Coastal water levels along Florida's Big Bend region, between Indian Pass and Chassahowitzka, could rise 30 to 90 centimeters above normal due to storm surge. Tropical-force winds exceeding 65 kilometers per hour are anticipated along the affected coast. These conditions are expected to develop within the next 36 to 48 hours as the system approaches.
Despite battling some dry air aloft, the depression benefits from weak wind shear, allowing for gradual strengthening as it nears the Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana coastlines by midweek. The system represents the first named storm activity in the Atlantic Basin in over a month, following Tropical Storm Arthur's formation in mid-June and subsequent landfall near Galveston, Texas.
