The exodus of performers occurred rapidly over the weekend. Country artist Martina McBride, scheduled for the opening night on June 25, cancelled her appearance. Poison frontman Bret Michaels withdrew from a July 3 slot originally positioned as an Independence Day-themed performance. Simultaneously, The Commodores, Young MC (best known for his 1989 hit "Bust a Move"), and additional acts announced they would not participate.

The departures left the 16-day event series planned for Washington DC's National Mall with minimal musical programming. Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, and Flo Rida remained committed to performances on June 26 and July 2, representing a dramatic reduction from the original lineup announced on Wednesday.

Trump's Response and Pivot

Trump announced his cancellation demand through Truth Social, labeling the event a failure. Rather than salvage the concert programming, he indicated plans to convert the celebration into a "Make America Great Again rally," fundamentally altering the event's character from a non-partisan national commemoration into a partisan political gathering. Trump is scheduled to headline the opening ceremony on June 24.

The White House had positioned Freedom 250 as a non-partisan initiative separate from America250, a congressionally established bipartisan organization formed a decade ago to oversee the 250th anniversary celebrations. However, Trump had signed an executive order creating his own taskforce to deliver what he termed "a grand celebration worthy" of the milestone, establishing Freedom 250 with a CEO appointed by the president himself.

The official America250 organization, led by appointees from both political parties, has organized its own July 4 events across New York City, Philadelphia, and California, along with block parties nationwide.
