Trump Issues Warning to Iran as US Launches Fresh Military Strikes

The United States has launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran as President Donald Trump issued direct warnings to Tehran, demanding the nation return to negotiations and "better behave." The escalation marks the fifth consecutive day of renewed hostilities that threatens to unravel a preliminary agreement designed to end the broader conflict between the two nations.

Military Operations Intensify

The US military confirmed it targeted Iranian military capabilities positioned to threaten commercial vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. American forces also engaged a vessel attempting to breach the renewed naval blockade of Iranian ports. The strikes represent an accelerated response to Iranian counterattacks, with Tehran claiming its military had struck US installations across the region, including targets in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Trump made his position unambiguous during remarks to reporters, stating that Iran knows what is expected and emphasizing the consequences of non-compliance. When asked if he would establish a specific deadline, Trump declined but indicated the Iranian leadership understood his intent. Later, addressing delegates at a defence summit, he characterised the Iranian position as desperate, saying Tehran "wants to settle so badly" while acknowledging the possibility of military escalation if negotiations fail.

Diplomatic Stalemate and Threats

Iran's top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, rejected the preliminary deal framework, stating Tehran has "no reason" to honour an agreement that fails to deliver tangible benefits. He argued that maintaining Iranian control over strategic arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz remains essential to national security. Ghalibaf framed the conflict as "existential," combining military resistance with diplomatic engagement as Tehran's dual strategy.

Trump had previously threatened to target Iranian civilian infrastructure, including bridges and power plants, if negotiations did not resume. This threat drew criticism from the UN, with human rights officials warning such actions could constitute war crimes under international law.

Glimmers of Diplomatic Progress

Despite the military escalation, a potential opening emerged when Iran released Dena Karari, an American citizen detained since December, whom Trump described as having been "wrongfully detained." Trump publicly praised Iran for this "gesture of goodwill," suggesting the possibility of negotiations if both sides demonstrate flexibility. Karari was reported to be en route to the United States in good condition.
