Madison Square Garden will operate under heightened security protocols for the Knicks' NBA Finals Game 3, following confirmation that President Trump will attend the matchup—the first NBA Finals game held in New York since 1999. The visit has prompted street closures spanning multiple blocks, the installation of protective barriers, and the cancellation of an outdoor watch party previously scheduled near the venue. Officials have urged fans attending the game to arrive at least two hours early and bring minimal belongings.

Security Perimeter and Street Closures

The New York Police Department has established a secure area extending from West 30th Street to West 35th Street, between Sixth and Eighth avenues. Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue will be closed to vehicular and general pedestrian traffic beginning at 4 p.m. Access to the secure zone is restricted to ticketed game attendees, those with train tickets, employees of businesses in the area, and credentialed personnel.

Physical security enhancements now surround Madison Square Garden, including anti-scaling fencing, vehicular mitigation barriers, and crowd-control infrastructure. The Secret Service coordinated with NYPD on the security arrangements. Temporary street closures will also occur as Trump arrives and departs the arena.

Watch Party Adjustments

Police canceled the originally planned outdoor watch party adjacent to Madison Square Garden in coordination with Secret Service requirements. However, the Knicks established alternate viewing locations across New York City to accommodate fans unable to attend in person. Team-sanctioned watch parties are operating at Wollman Rink in Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl, both of which reached capacity by Sunday afternoon. A third event was added at Bryant Park, offering free admission with a maximum capacity of 5,000 attendees and requiring prior registration.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani characterized the watch parties as celebrations of New York City unity, noting that fans from every borough have gathered to support the team. The outdoor watch party near Madison Square Garden is expected to resume for Game 4 of the NBA Finals series.
