UK Defence Invests Billion Pounds in Leonardo Helicopter Deal While US Drone Strikes Military Aircraft
The UK Ministry of Defence has secured 23 medium helicopters from Leonardo in a billion-pound contract with substantial renegotiations.

The UK Ministry of Defence has committed over one billion pounds to procure 23 medium helicopters from Leonardo, following tensions between defence and treasury departments over procurement timing. Separately, the FBI and FAA are investigating after a drone struck an LAPD helicopter in the Tarzana area of Los Angeles, raising renewed concerns about civilian unmanned aircraft interfering with emergency operations.
UK Helicopter Procurement Deal
Defence Minister Luke Pollard confirmed the helicopter contract with Leonardo, emphasising that timing constraints drove the decision. The original bid from Leonardo had a deadline approaching, meaning delayed action would have required restarting the entire procurement process or accepting significant financial risk. Rather than simply accepting inherited terms, the government renegotiated key elements of the agreement to secure strategic benefits.
The revised deal includes Leonardo committing to base its defence helicopter export operations in Yeovil, Somerset, and establishing the site as a centre for autonomous helicopter production. This builds on earlier government investment in the Proteus autonomous helicopter programme. UK content in exported helicopters has increased substantially—from approximately 8 per cent under the previous administration to levels approaching Typhoon fighter jet standards, now in the 40 per cent range. The government has also awarded a Defence Technical Excellence College to Yeovil and expanded places at Yeovil College.
The timing of the announcement created friction between the Treasury and Ministry of Defence. While the Treasury unveiled the contract in February with stated MOD support, the defence department appeared less enthusiastic publicly. Lucy Rigby, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, acknowledged the misalignment with the Defence Investment Plan but characterised the decision as investing in a key industrial site and maintaining strategic UK advantage. Pollard noted that ideally such decisions would align with broader defence planning cycles, but scheduling constraints necessitated an earlier move.
US Drone Incident Raises Safety Questions
In California, an Airbus AS350 helicopter operated by the Los Angeles Police Department was struck by a drone measuring approximately 3 by 3 feet near the intersection of Highway 101 and Reseda Boulevard in Tarzana. The collision occurred just before 3 p.m. on a Tuesday, prompting the pilot and passenger to make a precautionary landing at Van Nuys Airport. Only the aircraft's windshield sustained damage; neither crew member was injured.
The FBI and FAA confirmed investigations into the incident. Initial theories suggested the drone operator was capturing footage of a nearby brush fire at the Encino Reservoir, though flight tracking data revealed the helicopter was not over the fire when struck. FlightAware records show the LAPD helicopter responded to the fire area at approximately 1:30 p.m., then departed for other patrol duties. It returned nearly 90 minutes later to assist officers searching for a kidnapping suspect—a location more than 1.5 miles from the fire—when the drone collision occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board was notified but declined to open a formal investigation due to the absence of significant damage or injuries.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a public warning to drone operators, stating that anyone interfering with fire or police operations would face arrest and prosecution. The incident underscores escalating concerns about unmanned aircraft operating in airspace shared with emergency services and law enforcement helicopters.
