The UK is bracing for another heatwave next week as temperatures climb back toward record-breaking levels across southern and central England. After a brief cooling period this week, conditions will warm significantly from Saturday onwards, with highs reaching 30-33C by Tuesday. The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat health alerts across seven regions including London, the South East, East Midlands, West Midlands, South West, East of England, and Yorkshire and the Humber.

Current Weather Pattern and Forecast

A temporary cool spell has provided relief across much of the UK through Thursday, with temperatures settling between 15C and 24C — closer to typical August averages. However, this respite will be short-lived. From Saturday, warming will begin across England and Wales, with Friday offering a dry, settled day featuring sunshine and highs near 29C in central and southern areas.

By Sunday, temperatures will climb to between 30-32C in southern and south-east England, with similar highs expected across central and southern regions through the following week. The Met Office forecasts particularly warm conditions for Tuesday, when central and southern England along with parts of Wales will reach 30-33C. Rainfall during this period will remain minimal, with only scattered showers expected—insufficient to meaningfully address the prolonged dry conditions affecting the country.

Record-Breaking Summer Heat

This renewed heatwave continues an exceptional summer for UK temperatures. The nation recently recorded its 34th day of temperatures at or above 30C (86F) in a single calendar year, equalling a record previously set in 1995. Forecasters anticipate this milestone will be surpassed as early as next week, with potential for a sixth heatwave event. England and Wales experienced their driest July since records began in 1836, with some areas receiving no measurable rainfall throughout the entire month. Nineteen English counties recorded 1mm of rain or less, while one location in Surrey reported 50 consecutive days without precipitation—outpacing even the notorious 1976 drought by two weeks.

Health Precautions and Regional Impact

The yellow heat health alerts will remain in effect from 9am Saturday through 9pm Tuesday, advising vulnerable populations to take precautions during the warm spell. While much of England and Wales will experience dry, settled conditions, northern regions will see different weather patterns. Scotland and Northern Ireland can expect cloud cover and scattered rain on Saturday, though Sunday will bring drier conditions. Strong westerly winds clearing the high humidity of recent days will fade, allowing oppressive moisture levels to return during the upcoming heat event.
