UK Reports Sharp Rise in Cyclospora Infections Linked to Mexico Travel

UK health authorities have confirmed 67 cyclospora infections among returning travellers, with the majority linked to holidays in Mexico, according to data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The parasitic infection causes severe watery diarrhoea and has prompted warnings about food and water hygiene for British holidaymakers.

Cases and Geographic Spread

Between late April and mid-July, England recorded 30 cases, Scotland 27, and Wales 10, marking a significant increase compared to the annual average of 93 cases documented over the previous three years. Of the 52 cases where travel information was available, 48 patients reported visiting Mexico, with most staying in either the Riviera Maya or Cancún regions as part of all-inclusive resort packages. One additional case involved travel to Kenya, while two others reported visits to the United States, where a broader outbreak has affected more than 18,000 people across 45 states.

Infection Source and Symptoms

Cyclospora is a parasite that contaminates fresh produce, particularly herbs, salads, and soft fruits. The infection does not occur naturally in the United Kingdom and cannot spread between people. Symptoms include frequent and explosive watery diarrhoea—some patients report needing the toilet up to 20 times daily—alongside abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, and low-grade fever. While most infections resolve without treatment within days, severe cases, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, may require antibiotic intervention.

Prevention and Outlook

Health officials recommend travellers drink only bottled water and consume thoroughly cooked food, even at high-end resorts. Unpeeled fruit, raw salads, and fresh berries should be avoided. The UKHSA anticipates continued case increases due to ongoing summer travel patterns and the concurrent US outbreak. Investigations into the source of contamination remain active, with no deaths reported to date.
