Valve's Steam Machine Launches at £879, Pricing It Far Above PlayStation 5 as Component Costs Soar
Valve launched the Steam Machine gaming PC at £879, well above initial expectations due to surging RAM and storage expenses.

Valve has unveiled its Steam Machine gaming computer at £879 in the United Kingdom and $1,049 in the United States, citing rising component costs as the reason for abandoning its original, more affordable target price. The company acknowledged that when it began sourcing components in 2023, industry patterns suggested hardware costs would continue declining over time. Instead, memory and storage component prices have escalated significantly, forcing the redesigned device—a spiritual successor to Valve's failed 2014 console—to carry a premium price tag that positions it squarely in niche territory.
The Cost Shock That Changed Plans
Valve's expectations about hardware pricing collapsed rapidly over the past year. The company had previously raised prices on its Steam Deck handheld device by 40% due to similar supply chain pressures, and announced its new Steam Controller would cost £85. A bundle combining the controller with a 512GB Steam Machine model will retail for £938, while a 2TB configuration reaches £1,208 with the controller included—or £1,149 without it.
Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis noted that market research had projected a starting price between $700 and $800 for the device. The final pricing, approximately 75% above a PlayStation 5 console, cements Steam Machine as a premium, niche offering rather than a mass-market competitor. High-end gaming PCs typically exceed console prices, though Steam games often cost less than titles on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo platforms.
Design and Performance Appeal
Despite its cost, the Steam Machine carries distinctive appeal. Digital Foundry's hands-on assessment described the hardware as beautifully designed and virtually silent, comparable in size to a taller Nintendo GameCube. Performance aligns with Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 levels. The device features replaceable faceplates held by magnets, allowing personalization, with third parties expected to produce custom options. The 2TB model ships with red fabric and solid walnut faceplates included. Storage is expandable via M.2 slots supporting both 2230 and 2280 form factors, alongside microSD card hot-swapping. HDMI 2.1 supports HDR and AMD FreeSync technology.
SteamOS, the operating system exclusive to the device, provides a refined interface that carries forward Deck functionality with enhanced performance. Valve has not disclosed specific CPU and GPU model numbers, describing them instead as semi-custom components built on AMD architecture.
