Pradeep Rawat, a veteran character actor whose career spanned nearly four decades across Bollywood, Tollywood, and Kollywood, has passed away at age 74 following a battle with blood cancer. The actor, who became synonymous with memorable villain roles and equally powerful supporting characters, died at a Mumbai hospital where he had been receiving treatment. His passing was confirmed by his manager, Siddharth R Tiwari, with tributes quickly pouring in from colleagues and the broader film fraternity.

A Career Defined by Range and Intensity

Rawat's most iconic performance came as Ghajini Dharmatma in the Tamil-language original, a role he reprised in the 2008 Hindi remake starring Aamir Khan. That menacing portrayal became one of the most recognizable villain characterizations in contemporary Indian cinema. Yet his reputation extended well beyond antagonistic roles. In the 2001 Oscar-nominated sports drama Lagaan, he portrayed Deva, a fiercely loyal Sikh sepoy, demonstrating his capacity to command the screen with warmth and conviction rather than menace.

His contributions to South Indian cinema earned equal recognition. Rawat received a Filmfare Award for Best Villain for his performance as Bhikshu Yadav in director S.S. Rajamouli's 2004 Telugu film Sye. Early in his career, he became familiar to audiences as Ashwatthama in B.R. Chopra's 1988 television epic Mahabharat, establishing himself as a versatile performer capable of bridging television and cinema. His final on-screen role appeared in the Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava, where he played Yesaji Kank.
