Volodymyr Zelensky Dismisses Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov Amid Military Leadership Crisis

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov following a breakdown in relations with military commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, triggering mass protests across Ukrainian cities. The 35-year-old defence minister, appointed only in January, was widely credited with modernising the ministry and driving anti-corruption efforts before the sudden removal.

The Leadership Conflict

Zelensky acknowledged at a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that tensions between the Defence Ministry and the General Staff had become "systemic" and occurred "at various levels." The conflict had reached a point where both sides could not function together without presidential mediation, Zelensky explained, forcing him to choose which faction to support.

Fedorov himself revealed the core disagreement: he had recommended that Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov be replaced. At his own press conference, Fedorov criticised Syrskyi for failing to develop asymmetrical strategies against Russia and for "splitting the country" instead of focusing on military objectives. He stated that all initiatives proposed by the Defence Ministry had been blocked by military leadership.

Public Backlash and Resignation Details

The dismissal ignited significant public anger. More than 1,000 protesters gathered outside the presidential office in Kyiv on Thursday, with demonstrations occurring in multiple Ukrainian cities. Crowds held placards reading "Hands off Fedorov" and "Stop sabotaging victory," while chanting demands for Syrskyi's removal. This marked only the second major anti-government protest since Russia's 2022 invasion, with civil society and foreign allies expressing dismay at Zelensky's decision to back the military commander.

Parliament approved the appointment of Ihor Klymenko, currently heading the interior ministry, as the proposed replacement, though Zelensky indicated other candidates were being considered. The reshuffle also saw Serhiy Koretsky, former state oil and gas executive, approved as prime minister following Yuliia Svyrydenko's resignation.

International Context

Starmer's farewell visit to Kyiv was overshadowed by the political crisis. The two leaders exchanged symbolic gifts—Starmer presenting a framed Ukrainian flag that had flown above Downing Street in February 2022, while Zelensky awarded Starmer the Order of Freedom, Ukraine's highest foreign honour. Starmer pledged that British support for Ukraine would remain unwavering despite his imminent departure from office.
