Walmart Cashier Arrested After Concealing Winning Florida Lottery Receipt from Customer

A Walmart cashier in DeLand, Florida was arrested on felony grand theft charges after allegedly hiding a receipt required to claim a $2,700 Florida Lottery prize belonging to an elderly customer. The incident occurred at a Walmart convenience store along South Woodland Boulevard, and surveillance video allegedly captured the cashier placing the receipt into her uniform vest pocket before leaving work.

What Happened

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, the customer visited the store on Sunday morning with a winning Florida Lottery ticket and received instructions from the cashier, 40-year-old Tameka Hall, on how to claim the prize. Hours later, the man realized he had not received the receipt needed to complete the claim process and returned to the store to report the issue to management.

A store manager reviewed surveillance footage at the request of management. The video allegedly showed Hall folding the receipt and placing it into the left pocket of her uniform vest before departing for the day. Deputies met with Hall inside the store's security office on Monday morning. According to investigators, Hall told them she became distracted by another customer after helping the lottery winner and placed the receipt in her pocket intending to deliver it to a manager, though she never did.

Recovery and Charges

Authorities accompanied Hall to her vehicle, where they recovered the winning lottery receipt. She was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with felony grand theft. Walmart confirmed that Hall is no longer employed by the company but declined further comment on the incident.

For lottery prizes between $600 and $1 million that do not offer annual payment options, Florida Lottery regulations require claiming at a district office. Prizes of $250,000 or less may be claimed by mail using required documentation, including the original ticket, a completed Winner Claim Form, and acceptable identification. The receipt documenting the store transaction serves as essential documentation in the claim process.

Protecting Lottery Winnings

Oscar Acosta, founder of LottoExpert.net, advised lottery players to take immediate protective measures upon winning. He recommended signing the back of the ticket, photographing it, and maintaining all receipts connected to the claim. "You need to protect that ticket," Acosta said. "You don't want to lose track of that ticket." He also cautioned that lottery winners should exercise caution during the claims process, particularly given growing lottery participation, and consider claiming major prizes in person rather than by mail when feasible.
