West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves made Test cricket history during the opening match against Pakistan by becoming the first bowler ever recorded to claim wickets in five consecutive maiden overs. The 32-year-old's exceptional 5-27 bowling performance on the third day helped trigger a dramatic Pakistan collapse, and the hosts secured a 90-run victory in the first Test at Tarouba to take a 1-0 series lead in the World Test Championship fixture.

The Historic Achievement

Greaves surpassed the previous record of four consecutive wicket maidens, which had stood since Stuart Broad's performance against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2016. Playing in his 17th Test match, the 32-year-old Barbadian claimed his maiden five-wicket haul during a spell that proved decisive in West Indies' favour. Pakistan had appeared commanding at 244-3, with captain Shan Masood having reached a century, before Greaves triggered the collapse that would define the contest.

The seamer dismissed Masood for 109, then struck in successive maiden overs to remove Aamer Jamal, Ali Usman, and Mohammad Rizwan without conceding a run. Pakistan slipped to 267-8 at lunch before Greaves completed his historic five-wicket maiden-over sequence by having Mohammad Abbas caught behind. Pakistan's first innings eventually ended at 282, trailing West Indies' opening total of 311 by 29 runs.

West Indies' Path Forward

Captain Roston Chase has emphasized his ambition to establish the Caribbean side as formidable competitors in home conditions, particularly following a challenging year that included only one Test victory from nine matches. West Indies currently occupy eighth place in the World Test Championship standings with 30 points, positioned just above Pakistan. Chase remains committed to turning the Caribbean into a fortress where opposing teams face exceptional difficulty competing.

Chase himself was unavailable to bowl during the first Test due to a right index finger injury, though he indicated readiness to contribute from the second match onward. The second Test begins in Port of Spain on August 2, where West Indies will seek to secure the series with another victory and continue building momentum under the captain's strategic vision.
