Yordan Alvarez Emerges as Baseball's Premier Slugger a Decade After Astros' Pivotal Trade

The Houston Astros acquired a 19-year-old Cuban prospect named Yordan Alvarez from the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 1, 2016, for relief pitcher Josh Fields, a trade that has become one of the most lopsided in baseball history. A decade later, Alvarez stands as the game's most dangerous hitter and the frontrunner for the American League MVP Award.

The Trade That Changed Everything

When the Astros announced the swap on social media, the reaction from Houston fans ranged from confusion to outright anger. Alvarez had never played a professional game at the time, having just signed with the Dodgers roughly six weeks earlier for $2 million. He was living and training at the team's Dominican Republic academy when officials knocked on his door to inform him of the trade.

"I remember being in my bed when somebody knocked on the door and they asked me if I can go to the main office," Alvarez recalled during an interview. Kevin Goldstein, who served as the Astros' director of pro scouting at the time, noted that the team identified "a really big guy with a whole lot of tools, who had a lot of power and looked like he could hit, too." The upside was evident, but Alvarez's ascent to elite status exceeded expectations.

From Unknown Prospect to League Leader

Alvarez made his major league debut in June 2019 and won the unanimous Rookie of the Year award despite appearing in fewer than half the season's games. Since then, the slugger has posted a career batting average of .300 with an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .978. He has earned selection to the All-MLB First or Second Team five times, captured a World Series championship with the Astros in 2022, and claimed a Silver Slugger Award.

Meanwhile, Josh Fields—the reliever the Astros surrendered—posted a solid 2.61 earned-run average across 124 games with the Dodgers from 2016 through 2018 before being designated for assignment in March 2019. He never appeared in the major leagues again. The contrast between the two careers underscores the magnitude of the Astros' prescience or, from the Dodgers' perspective, a missed opportunity.

This season, Alvarez leads all American League-qualified hitters in multiple statistical categories and has positioned the Astros atop the AL West standings. He currently leads the competition for the Triple Crown—the rarest individual honor in baseball, awarded to the player leading the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in during a single season.
