The Accident

Boone accompanied his father Bob and brother Bret on a Phillies road trip to Wrigley Field during a day game. While the brothers were playing in the outfield approximately 20 to 30 minutes before the game started, Bret used a fungo bat to hit fly balls. During this pre-game activity, one ball went airborne and Boone lost sight of it in the sun. The ball struck him directly in the head, leaving him unconscious.

Several members of the Phillies bullpen witnessed the incident and initially believed Boone was joking around rather than genuinely injured. Keith Moreland, a Phillies player, carried the young Boone to the training room. Medical staff informed him not to fall asleep—a standard concussion precaution. Boone recovered in the trainer's room for approximately 10 minutes before the game began, having suffered a full loss of consciousness from the impact.
