Arsenal and Newcastle United are in advanced talks over the transfer of midfielder Bruno Guimarães, with negotiations expected to reach a conclusion by late July as the two clubs work to bridge a gap in valuation. Arsenal has verbally agreed personal terms with the Brazil international captain, though Newcastle continues to insist their player remains not for sale. The dispute centres on fee structure, with Arsenal willing to offer £75 million while Newcastle sources indicate they are seeking closer to £85 million for their 28-year-old skipper.

The Current Negotiation Status

Multiple verbal offers have been placed by Arsenal, according to insiders, though Newcastle has not received a formal written bid. This discrepancy in communication reflects disagreement over what constitutes a formal approach, potentially stemming from the involvement of intermediaries in discussions. Arsenal sources confirm three verbal proposals have been submitted, while Newcastle maintains no direct negotiations have commenced.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe declined to guarantee Guimarães will remain with the club, stating he is unaware of conversations occurring outside his purview. Howe emphasised his affection for the player while acknowledging uncertainty about his future. The midfielder is due to return for pre-season training on 31 July, a date transfer journalist Ben Jacobs identified as crucial for a final decision from both parties.

Arsenal's Summer Ambitions and Newcastle's Position

Arsenal has already completed three summer signings—defender Piero Hincapié, goalkeeper Illan Meslier, and forward Christos Tzolis—and views Guimarães as their primary midfield target. The Premier League champions believe securing the 28-year-old would strengthen their options in central midfield ahead of the new season. Newcastle has reinforced their midfield by signing Sean Steur from Ajax and Aladji Bamba from Monaco, but insiders suggest this is insufficient justification for losing Guimarães. With two years remaining on his contract, Newcastle operates from a position of strength and faces no external pressure to sell.
