Three major wildfires have ravaged the Spokane area, destroying an estimated 700 structures and forcing the evacuation of nearly 65,000 people within hours. A 37-year-old man has been arrested on arson charges in connection with the Old Trails Fire, the largest of the three blazes. The three wildfires erupted across middle- and working-class neighborhoods in and around Spokane, Washington's second-largest city. One 26-year-old resident reported seeing an orange glow and smoke columns in the distance, but within hours, flames had moved up hillsides toward his neighborhood. He and his neighbors evacuated in their vehicles as smoke engulfed suburban areas. The next day, when he returned, nothing remained of his home. His wife described the experience as feeling "like a bad dream," noting they were still "numb" from the sudden loss.

Another resident, a 35-year-old man, watched his childhood home—where he hoped to bring his own children—reduced to ash. He expressed shock at the speed of destruction and deep concern for his mother, who lost everything. Families throughout the region experienced similar devastation, with homes of 30 years or more consumed in minutes.

Arson Investigation and Official Response

Law enforcement arrested a 37-year-old man accused of intentionally igniting the Old Trails Fire. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson acknowledged that the arson allegation compounds the tragedy, stating that discovering such destruction may have been deliberately caused "makes it more heartbreaking." Fire officials confirmed they are investigating the causes of all three blazes.
