Aston Villa have secured midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal valued at £38 million, comprising an initial £34 million plus £4 million in performance-based add-ons. The 25-year-old Brazilian international has signed a five-year contract and completed his medical on Friday, marking the club's second midfield acquisition of the transfer window as they address injuries and departures in their squad.

Strategic Reinforcement After Injuries and Exits

Villa's recruitment activity reflects significant midfield challenges heading into the new season. Defensive midfielder Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee ligament injury while representing Belgium at the World Cup, sidelining him until next year. This injury compelled the club to accelerate its search for reinforcement. Additionally, Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United after the club's release clause was activated, creating another gap in the center of the park.

Manager Unai Emery championed the pursuit of Gomes, recognizing his qualities as an experienced Premier League performer. The midfielder can operate alongside Boubacar Kamara or provide cover when the French international manages his return from his own long-term injury. Emery intends to develop Gomes' possession play while capitalizing on his existing work rate and tactical awareness.

Gomes arrived at Wolverhampton from Brazilian club Flamengo in 2023 and made 130 appearances for the West Midlands side. During Wolves' final Premier League season before relegation, he featured in 35 of their 38 league matches. The midfielder has earned 10 senior international caps for Brazil, most recently appearing in March. Gomes represents Villa's second significant midfield signing, following the club-record acquisition of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for more than £50 million.
