Ben Stokes Rules Out 2027 Ashes Return and Pursues Coaching Ambitions with England

Ben Stokes has definitively ruled out any international comeback and revealed his long-term ambition to become England's Test coach. Speaking on the For the Love of Cricket podcast, the 35-year-old former captain confirmed he will not reverse his retirement for the 2027 Ashes series and outlined his plan to transition into coaching once his playing career ends.

Permanent Retirement Confirmed

Stokes stepped away from international cricket in June following England's 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand, which came weeks after a 4-1 Ashes loss to Australia. When asked directly by former teammate Jos Buttler whether he had definitely retired, Stokes was unequivocal: "Definitely." The all-rounder captained England's Test side for four years from 2022 and made 122 Test appearances alongside 114 one-day internationals and 43 T20 matches for his country.

His exit came shortly after he missed England's second Test against New Zealand following an off-field incident in a London nightclub. The announcement of his retirement had an immediate ripple effect, with head coach Brendon McCullum departing his position two weeks later. According to Stokes, McCullum's exit was directly connected to his own decision. "If I hadn't made the decision that I made four weeks ago, Baz would still be coach," Stokes revealed in the podcast interview.

Coaching Path Already Underway

Rather than dwell on his departure, Stokes is actively preparing for his next chapter. He is currently pursuing his Level Three coaching qualification while continuing to play domestic cricket. "I know what I want to do in terms of staying within the game, which is to be a coach," Stokes explained. "Would I love to be coach of England one day? Absolutely." The former captain emphasized the appeal of remaining in leadership roles but without the pressures of playing performance, suggesting he views coaching as a natural progression.

Concerns Over Leadership Decisions

Stokes also commented on England's recent captaincy restructuring. Stephen Fleming was appointed as the new Test head coach, with Joe Root reappointed as captain. Stokes expressed surprise that Harry Brook, whom he had backed as his successor and promoted to vice-captain, did not receive the role. "I think just if you think someone's going to be a good captain or a good leader, then just give them it," Stokes said, questioning the message that bypassing Brook sends about his future prospects. Despite these reservations, Stokes spoke with Root following the announcement and backed his longtime teammate to succeed in the role.
