Bristol Bears to Host Gloucester at Principality Stadium in West Country Derby
Bristol Bears will host Gloucester at Cardiff's Principality Stadium in round 13 of the upcoming Premiership campaign.

Bristol Bears will host Gloucester Rugby at Cardiff's Principality Stadium during round 13 of the 2026-27 Gallagher Premiership season, as part of an expanded strategy to host elite club matches at major stadiums. The fixture takes place three weeks after Gloucester's scheduled appearance at Villa Park, marking a significant shift in how English rugby's top division stages marquee matchups.
The West Country Derby Goes Big
The decision to stage the Bristol-Gloucester encounter at the Principality Stadium represents a calculated move by the Premiership to elevate rivalries beyond traditional home grounds. While Gloucester has already played an inaugural fixture in Birmingham last season, the confirmation of their return to a major venue—alongside the Bristol clash in Cardiff—signals confidence in bringing club rugby to expanded audiences. The matchup falls within a congested fixture calendar that also sees Harlequins host two annual "Big Game" fixtures at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium, including their seasonal opener against Northampton.
A Restructured Season Takes Shape
The 2026-27 campaign introduces structural changes that reflect rugby's franchise-style evolution. Promotion and relegation have been officially scrapped from the division, formalising what has been practice since Saracens' movements in 2020 and 2021. The season itself breaks into five rounds across six weeks in September and October, followed by a four-week pause for the autumn Nations Championship matches. After European competition resumes in December with four Premiership rounds across six weeks, another extended break in February and March accommodates the Six Nations Championship. The season concludes with playoffs leading to the Premiership Final on 19 June 2027 at Twickenham.
The opening weekend features defending champions Northampton hosting Newcastle at home on 25 September, while Gloucester visit Exeter on the Saturday. Sale Sharks begin their campaign at home against Bristol Bears on 26 September at 5:30 PM, setting up an immediate test against Brendan Venter's Saracens in round two.
