The decision comes as Cambridge University announced a formal investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments, with separate ongoing complaints regarding academic misconduct also under review.

The Resignation and Rationale

Arday, who made history as the youngest Black professor appointed at Cambridge University, announced his departure through a statement coordinated by the Good Law Project. He described his professorship as "without question, the greatest professional privilege of my life," yet acknowledged that the sustained public scrutiny and personal attacks had reached an unsustainable level. He emphasized that his resignation should not be interpreted as acceptance of the narratives surrounding him or as a loss of faith in scholarship.

The academic cited the personal cost to his wellbeing and family as the decisive factor, stating he needs "time to heal" and expressing his intention to return to work in the future. However, he stopped short of conceding to the substantive allegations against him.

The Allegations and Investigation

Arday initially faced plagiarism accusations targeting his doctoral thesis and other published research. An investigation by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his PhD in 2015, did not uphold plagiarism charges but attributed discrepancies to "honest and reasonable error." Despite this finding, questions persisted regarding multiple aspects of his public narrative, including claims about fundraising achievements and alleged confrontations with knife-wielding intruders.

The criticism intensified following contributions from Nathan Cofnas, an academic removed from his Cambridge position in 2024, who publicly identified numerous instances of plagiarism in Arday's work and questioned some of his stated credentials. While Arday acknowledged errors in his publications, he has maintained he is not "a liar" and has consistently denied intentional plagiarism.

Cambridge's Response and Ongoing Processes

Cambridge University stated it began its investigation "following new information" about Arday's qualifications and appointments. The institution emphasized that the process will proceed according to university policy and employment law, while also noting that "a person at the centre of this situation" continues to receive institutional support. Jesus College, where Arday held a fellowship, announced it would launch a parallel process alongside the university's formal inquiry.
