Celebrated Japanese Author Keigo Higashino Dies at 68; Film and Television Adaptations Set for Release This Year

Acclaimed Japanese mystery author Keigo Higashino died from colorectal cancer, leaving behind a legacy of literary works that have generated dozens of film and television adaptations. Two major productions based on his novels are set to release this year, continuing the adaptation of his most popular titles.

Death and Legacy

Higashino, a recipient of the Naoki Prize, passed away in the early hours of the 23rd. His body of work encompasses numerous bestselling mystery and thriller novels that have become staples of Japanese popular entertainment. The breadth of his influence extends across multiple media formats, with his stories repeatedly chosen as source material for major film and television productions.

Productions Moving Forward

Despite his passing, two significant adaptations based on his writing will proceed as planned. A feature film titled "White Swan and Bat" will open on September 4th, featuring dual leads Hokuto Matsumura and Mio Imada in a mystery centered on a lawyer's murder. The film draws from a thriller novel that has sold over 1.5 million copies across its series.

A television drama titled "Hollow Cross" will premiere on September 6th on WOWOW, a premium Japanese broadcaster. The series stars Shingo Katori in the lead role of a former advertising executive who now operates a pet funeral business inherited from his uncle. The storyline explores themes of capital punishment and centers on the protagonist's struggles with isolation following the murder of his ex-wife, an event connected to a tragedy from eleven years prior. The source novel has achieved approximately 760,000 copies in circulation.
