The Celtic manager will be without Kieron Tierney, Anthony Ralston, Alistair Johnston, Daizen Maeda, Benjamin Nygren, Yang Hyun-jun, Auston Trusty, and Sebastian Tounekti for the Portuguese fixture. These absences stem from their involvement in international tournaments across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

New signing Camilo Duran, acquired for £5.5 million, may also miss the encounter after being unavailable for recent training sessions. Despite these gaps, O'Neill expressed satisfaction with the conditioning work completed during the squad's time at their summer training base in Portugal, citing excellent weather conditions and effective double-session training blocks.

Opposition and Season Outlook

Sporting CP, runners-up in Portugal's Premera Ligue, will compete in next season's Champions League and face similar squad management challenges with their own World Cup participants sidelined. O'Neill acknowledged the quality of the opposition while noting that both clubs are in transitional phases of their pre-season schedules.

Celtic's competitive campaign begins on August 3 when Dundee visit Parkhead for the Scottish Premiership opener. Two further friendlies against Middlesbrough and AC Milan, both at Celtic Park, will precede that fixture, allowing O'Neill to continue evaluating his squad composition as the club pursues a sixth consecutive league title.
