Channel 5 Secures Free-to-Air Tour de France Highlights in TNT Sports Deal

Channel 5 will broadcast daily highlights of the Tour de France and other major cycling races free-to-air across the UK under a landmark three-year agreement between TNT Sports and Warner Bros. Discovery. The partnership also secures live coverage of the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ, which will take place across England, Scotland, and Wales. This development marks a significant recovery for British cycling fans following the loss of ITV's long-standing coverage when exclusive rights transferred to TNT Sports through 2030.

Deal Structure and Coverage Timeline

The agreement between TNT Sports and Channel 5 establishes daily highlights packages for cycling's three grand tours, with evening broadcasts scheduled for 7pm throughout each race period. Sports presenter and journalist Rebecca Charlton will front the highlights show. The arrangement covers the Tour de France and Vuelta a España from 2026 through 2028, while Giro d'Italia coverage extends from 2027 to 2029. Women's Tour de France highlights will also feature on the schedule.

The 2027 Grand Départ represents the centrepiece of the arrangement. When the men's and women's editions of the Tour de France begin in the United Kingdom, Channel 5 will broadcast the opening three stages live across the nation. This live coverage provides free-to-air access to what will be one of cycling's most significant events on British soil in decades. In contrast, accessing TNT Sports' comprehensive coverage currently requires a subscription of £34.99 per month.

Context and Strategic Importance

The deal follows substantial frustration among UK cycling enthusiasts after Warner Bros. Discovery acquired exclusive broadcasting rights to the Tour de France and maintained them through 2030. That transition removed the race from ITV, where it had been broadcast without charge for approximately three decades. The new Channel 5 arrangement represents a compromise that reinstates free-to-air access while maintaining TNT Sports' exclusive live coverage rights.
