Disney Plus releases Descendants: Wicked Wonderland with new Wonderland characters and plot twist

Disney Plus will premiere Descendants: Wicked Wonderland on 17 July 2026 in the UK, continuing the franchise with returning leads Kylie Cantrall as Red and Malia Baker as Chloe. The fifth instalment introduces new characters and a previously unknown villain created as a consequence of the previous film's time-travel events.

Plot and New Antagonist

Descendants: Wicked Wonderland follows directly from The Rise of Red, where Red and Chloe's mission to alter the past appeared successful. Cinderella became safe, the Queen of Hearts underwent transformation, and normalcy seemed assured. The new film upends this resolution when the pair discovers that their temporal intervention created an unforeseen problem: Maddox Hatter emerges as an entirely new threat to Wonderland.

When Maddox captures the Queen of Hearts, Red and Chloe must reassemble with both returning and new allies. The expanded team includes Red's newly discovered sister Pink, Luis from the Madrigal family line, Hazel the daughter of Captain Hook, and Max, who is Maddox's own son. Together they navigate the consequences of changing history and work to prevent Wonderland's collapse.

Cast and Creative Team

The film reunites core cast members while welcoming fresh additions. Awkwafina joins as the voice of Chessy the Cat, while Leonardo Nam returns as the central villain Maddox Hatter. Melanie Paxson reprises her role as Fairy Godmother, and Paolo Montalban returns as King Charming. New cast members include Liamani as Pink, Kiara as Hazel, Brendon as Max, and Alexandro as Luis.

Director Kimmy Gatewood leads the project, with screenplay by Tamara Chestna, Dan Frey, and Ru Sommer. Emmy Award-winning choreographer Emilio Dosal contributes original music-and-dance sequences, while executive producers Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh return from previous instalments. The soundtrack will become available through Walt Disney Records from 17 July 2026.

Rita Ora, who portrays the Queen of Hearts, attended the Los Angeles premiere wearing a theatrical crimson gown designed by Do Long, maintaining a consistent red colour palette across both Descendants film promotions. The styling choice reflects the heightened fantasy aesthetic that defines the franchise's visual identity.
