Dodgers Acquire Two-Time Cy Young Winner Tarik Skubal in Blockbuster Trade Deadline Deal
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from Detroit in a blockbuster trade deadline deal.

The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a major trade deadline acquisition by securing two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, sending a package of three prospects to Detroit in return. Skubal will make his Dodgers debut on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigleyfield, as the defending back-to-back champions make their push toward a historic three-peat.
The Trade Details
Los Angeles dealt three prospects to acquire Skubal, who will become a free agent after this season. The package included outfielder Zyhir Hope, ranked No. 25 overall on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospect list, and right-hander River Ryan, ranked No. 68. Right-hander Brady Smith, the Dodgers' 17th-ranked prospect, completed the trio sent to Detroit.
Skubal represents an historic acquisition. He is the first reigning Cy Young Award winner to be traded mid-season since Justin Verlander moved to Houston in 2023. Only six reigning Cy Young winners have been traded since 1989, making this move exceptionally rare in modern baseball.
Strategic Positioning and Team Strength
The Dodgers structured the deadline from a position of organizational depth that few teams can match. While parting with highly-regarded prospects, Los Angeles retained a loaded pool of outfield prospects capable of contributing for years. River Ryan, currently sidelined on the Triple-A injured list with a strained right hamstring, needed a guaranteed big league opportunity that the Dodgers could not provide at this moment.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman emphasized the organization's competitive advantage. "There just aren't that many star-level players in the game, and any time one is available, we're always going to participate in those conversations," Friedman stated. "We've traded a lot of really talented young players, but we're able to be in those conversations because of the incredible work by our scouts, our front office and our player development group."
With current World Series odds at +160 to complete the three-peat and favorites at -370 to secure the National League's top playoff seed, the Dodgers solidified their status as championship frontrunners. Skubal's acquisition, combined with less impactful moves from division rivals, reinforced their advantage heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
