Francesca Hong Emerges as Democratic Socialist Frontrunner in Wisconsin Governor Race

Wisconsin's Democratic Party faces a defining moment as state assemblywoman Francesca Hong, a self-described democratic socialist, leads the primary field for governor in a state that has consistently decided presidential elections by razor-thin margins. Hong's candidacy represents a test of whether the progressive movement's recent primary victories in safely Democratic districts can translate into success in a perennial battleground.

The 37-year-old legislator from Madison has built her campaign on an expansive progressive platform. Her proposals include establishing a public bank and public grocery stores, universal child care, free school lunches, paid family leave, and a $20 minimum wage. Hong, who worked her way from kitchen positions to become a chef and restaurant co-owner, has organized a grassroots operation featuring more than 7,000 volunteers and recorded campaign materials in working-class settings alongside imagery evoking labor solidarity.

Hong's path to frontrunner status accelerated after her two main competitors encountered significant obstacles. Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez withdrew following a campaign finance scandal, while former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes suspended his candidacy in early July. Current Democratic Governor Tony Evers and party establishment figures have attempted a last-minute consolidation around David Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive who initially dropped out before re-entering the race. However, the most recent Marquette Law School poll—Wisconsin's most respected polling authority—showed Hong commanding 38 percent support in a five-candidate field, more than double her nearest competitor.

Wisconsin's Historical Pattern of Extremes

Wisconsin's political culture provides Hong with both opportunity and challenge. The state has produced progressive pioneers like Robert La Follette alongside conservative firebrand Joseph McCarthy. More recently, voters have backed both liberal senators Russ Feingold and Tammy Baldwin as well as right-wing Republicans Scott Walker and Ron Johnson. Hong explicitly references this history in her campaign messaging, framing Wisconsin as "a laboratory for democracy and a petri dish for conservatism," and positioning her candidacy as an opportunity to advance democratic socialist experimentation at the state level.

Republican Opposition and the General Election Outlook

Republican nominee Tom Tiffany, a U.S. Representative, has already begun attacking Hong's positions. He has connected her to the Democratic Socialists of America's platform and highlighted her past calls for police defunding—a position that will likely feature prominently in Republican advertising. Hong has attempted to distance herself from some DSA platform elements, stating she does not support the full national DSA platform and is not endorsed by DSA National. She has also clarified that governors cannot unilaterally defund police departments and that she does not govern "by slogan."

The general election contest will test whether a democratic socialist candidate can assemble a winning coalition in America's quintessential swing state, where polarization runs deep and historical precedent shows voters willing to embrace both progressive and conservative candidates.
