Dorset Police warn residents of account takeover fraud targeting broadband and mobile providers
Dorset Police has issued a warning following a case where criminals used stolen login credentials to access a resident's broadband account.

Dorset Police has warned residents about a rising scam targeting broadband and mobile provider accounts, where criminals use compromised login details to order devices, set up unauthorised services, and conduct identity fraud. The warning follows a case in which a community member discovered their internet service had been cut off, only to learn that their account had been exploited to purchase mobile phones and accessories without permission.

How the scam works
The victim in the reported case found that an order for a new mobile phone and related accessories had been placed using their account credentials. A credit check had been completed in their name as part of the fraudulent transaction. Fortunately, the order was cancelled before dispatch, but the criminals had also established a new Direct Debit for mobile services that the victim had never authorised.
Fraudsters typically obtain login credentials through phishing emails, deceptive phone calls, or publicly disclosed data breaches. Once they gain access to an account, they exploit security procedures by using stolen personal information to bypass verification checks. Their goal is to order high-value devices on credit, which they then sell for profit.
Warning signs and protective steps
Dorset Police has identified five key indicators that an account may have been compromised: unexplained credit searches appearing on financial records, orders placed without authorisation, unfamiliar Direct Debits set up on accounts, unexpected delivery of devices or SIM cards, and sudden loss of access to online accounts. Residents who suspect they are victims should contact their provider immediately, report the fraud, cancel any unauthorised Direct Debits, and change all passwords associated with their accounts.
