Dustin Poirier has asserted that a clothing malfunction—not superior fighting—allowed Arman Tsarukyan to survive a potentially match-ending guillotine choke from Charles Oliveira during their UFC 300 lightweight title eliminator in April 2024. Poirier believes Tsarukyan's shorts slipping down during the submission attempt gave the Georgian fighter enough movement to escape Oliveira's guard.
The Disputed Escape
During the opening round at UFC 300, Oliveira caught Tsarukyan in an extremely tight guillotine choke. However, as Tsarukyan worked to defend against the submission by lowering his hips, his shorts came loose and slipped down past his buttocks. Poirier theorizes this wardrobe failure broke Oliveira's grip and allowed Tsarukyan to slip free from what would have been a successful submission finish.
Speaking on the Deep Waters podcast, Poirier explained his analysis: "The shorts slipped off and it allowed him to get out of Charles' guard. He had full guard, locked in guillotine. Arman started to get his hips down, his shorts came down which allowed Charles' guard to come off and saved Arman." The BMF champion added colorfully, "Cheeks clappin, or he would have been tappin.'"
A Split Decision That Sparked Debate
Tsarukyan ultimately won the bout via split decision, a result that immediately generated controversy within the MMA community. Supporters of both fighters have argued over who truly deserved the judges' verdict in what was described as a close and competitive fight. Poirier's assertion adds another layer to the discussion, suggesting that without the equipment failure, the outcome would have been determined differently and in Oliveira's favor.
The two men have been linked to a rematch scheduled for UFC 331 on September 19 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, though the UFC has not yet made an official announcement. Since their April 2024 encounter, Oliveira has competed four additional times with a record of three wins and one loss.
