Argentina captain Lionel Messi has contributed 80,000 euros to aid reconstruction efforts in Madrid's Sierra Oeste region, which was devastated by intense wildfires. The donation was publicly confirmed by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Madrid regional government, who expressed gratitude on official channels for the footballer's support of affected communities.

Scale of the Disaster

The wildfires that swept through the Sierra Oeste area, located west of the Spanish capital, burned more than 22,000 hectares of land—equivalent to approximately 54,300 acres. The flames destroyed 43 homes and severely damaged over 300 additional properties. Emergency services brought the situation under control after nearly two weeks of intensive firefighting operations, though restoration efforts continue. Seven residential areas in the towns of Pelayos de la Presa and San Martín de Valdeiglesias remain closed to residents, with major access routes and infrastructure still shut pending further assessment.

Messi's Philanthropic Track Record

The 39-year-old footballer, currently playing for Inter Miami, has established a documented history of charitable contributions. Messi has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010 and operates the Lionel Messi Foundation, which has directed funding toward humanitarian initiatives including a pediatric cancer centre in Barcelona. In early 2025, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honour, recognizing his support for healthcare and education programmes benefiting children worldwide.

Ayuso stated in her public message: "Leo Messi has donated 80,000 euros to rebuild the Sierra Oeste area in Madrid.
