Ed Harris Says Yellowstone Spinoff 'Dutton Ranch' Misled Him About Role Importance

Hollywood veteran Ed Harris has publicly criticized producers of the Paramount series "Dutton Ranch" for misrepresenting the scope of his character's role before he signed on to the project. Harris revealed at the premiere of Apple TV's "The Dink" that he felt "underused and inconsequential" during filming of the Yellowstone spinoff's first season.

What Harris Said About His Role

Harris plays Everett McKinney, a veterinarian, in "Dutton Ranch." During his conversation with Variety at Monday evening's premiere, the actor explained that prior to accepting the position, he had extensive discussions about the scope of the season and his character's trajectory. He was explicitly told that he would be one of four principal characters driving the narrative forward during Season 1.

However, when Harris began actual production work, the reality diverged significantly from those initial discussions. By the midway point of filming the first season, Harris was instructing his team to remove him from the project. "I said, 'I'm feeling underused and inconsequential,' and they kind of went, 'Oh,'" Harris recounted to the publication.

The Cut Scene That Frustrated Harris

One particular moment crystallized Harris's disappointment. A scene was filmed in which his character engages in conversation with Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) at a bar. Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Cole Hauser, enters and invites Everett to sing. Harris's character approaches the microphone, but the scene and the song were completely removed from the final episode.

According to Harris, production personnel justified the cut by explaining the musical moment was tonally misaligned with the episode's darker conclusion. Harris found this reasoning insufficient and said at the time he considered the decision serious enough to warrant voiding his contractual commitment entirely. "Fuck you, people," Harris said of his reaction to the removal.

Current Status and Future Expectations

Harris indicated that producers have promised his character will receive expanded screen time in Season 2. He remains contracted for two seasons of "Dutton Ranch," though his statements suggest ambivalence about continuing. Despite his frustrations during production, Harris acknowledged that upon viewing the finished first season, he believed the work was "pretty good" and that his character did possess relative importance to the overall narrative—a perception that stood in contrast to how underutilized he felt while filming.

Paramount, Taylor Sheridan, and 101 Studios did not respond to requests for comment on Harris's claims at the time of publication.
