FA Faces Pressure to Quit FIFA Over Corruption and Fan Exploitation
The Liberal Democrats have called for the FA to withdraw from FIFA, citing widespread corruption and institutional failure.

The Liberal Democrats have called for England's Football Association and UEFA to withdraw from FIFA entirely, accusing the global governing body of systemic corruption and abandoning its responsibility to supporters and the sport itself. The political party claims FIFA is "corrupt beyond repair" and argues that only a coordinated European exit can restore integrity to international football.

The Core Complaints
The demands follow FIFA's decision to overturn a match suspension for American striker Folarin Balogun after direct intervention from US President Donald Trump. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey stated that FIFA Chief Gianni Infantino has "crossed red line after red line," allowing corporate interests to exploit fans at will while undermining the rules of the game.
Beyond the Balogun ruling, the party has highlighted multiple governance failures: dynamic pricing that pushed World Cup tickets beyond £24,000, hydration breaks introduced purely for commercial purposes that disrupted match flow, and the exclusion of both supporters and officials—including Somali referee Omar Artan—from entering the United States during the tournament. UEFA itself branded FIFA's handling of the Balogun incident "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable."
A Path Forward
Sir Ed has called for a "clean, transparent governing body" built by the FA working alongside other European confederations. Lib Dem MP Munira Wilson emphasized that fans remain caught between rule changes that undermine the sport and pricing strategies that drain their wallets. The party previously championed an international fan charter to protect supporters against predatory pricing and give them a collective voice in football governance.
The Liberal Democrats have also demanded Infantino's resignation and called for FIFA officials to appear before Parliament to answer for their conduct. However, any withdrawal by the FA would carry serious consequences: England would become ineligible to compete in the World Cup, as FIFA membership through national associations is a prerequisite for participation.
