Andrew Baxter, the Member of Scottish Parliament representing Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, has been engaging with local landowners and community groups about the inadequacies of current wildfire management systems. During recent discussions on BBC Radio Scotland, Baxter outlined the core problem: much of the terrain within the region is extremely difficult for firefighting vehicles and personnel to access.

Demands for Strategic Change

Baxter has identified helicopter access as a critical gap in Scotland's wildfire response capability. He argues that both the Scottish and UK governments should establish a programme of publicly funded firefighting aircraft available on short notice during high-risk seasons, rather than depending solely on private operators. The MSP has warned that without a robust fire plan supported by rapid aerial response, the region risks serious loss of life. He indicated plans to press the Scottish government on this issue, particularly regarding helicopter availability for tackling large wildfires across difficult terrain.

Infrastructure and Equipment Gaps
