Five men have been injured across Edinburgh in a series of suspected Islamophobic attacks carried out by a bare-chested man wielding a large weapon. A 36-year-old has been arrested and counter-terrorism officers have joined the investigation. Police responded to what they described as a "fast-moving sequence of events" that unfolded across multiple locations in the city.

Timeline and Locations
The attacks began near the Broomhouse mosque in west Edinburgh on Friday night, where two men were injured. The incidents then spread across the city, with additional attacks recorded on Telford Road and Leith Walk, several miles away from the initial incident. Police received their first call at approximately 20:50 and documented attacks at a Shell petrol station, a BP garage on Ferry Road, and the Origano pizzeria on Leith Walk.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the man vandalising vehicles and damaging property at multiple locations. At the Shell petrol station, a taxi's windows were smashed with a hand axe visible on the vehicle's seat. CCTV footage from the BP garage showed a man pushing over shelves and scattering items inside the kiosk. At the pizzeria, staff closed electronic shutters as the man repeatedly struck door panes with his weapon before walking away.
Victims and Response
The five injured men were aged 22, 22, 24, 27, and 39, with two taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Police confirmed that none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. MEND Scotland, a Muslim engagement group, stated that several victims were from the Muslim community, characterising the attacks as faith-based violence.
Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton issued a statement declaring that "there is no place for racism or faith-based hate in Scotland." The involvement of counter-terrorism officers signals the severity with which authorities are treating the incidents and their potential classification under hate crime legislation.
