Former '60 Minutes' Correspondent Cecilia Vega Accuses CBS Leadership of Pressuring Her to Report Fabricated Events

Cecilia Vega, a former '60 Minutes' correspondent, has publicly detailed claims that CBS News executives pressured her to include misinformation and political bias in her reporting during the final months before her termination. Vega stated she was asked to incorporate events that "never happened" and slant coverage toward Trump administration positions, marking what she described as unprecedented editorial interference in her 25-year journalism career.

Speaking at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference in New Orleans, Vega recounted specific instances of editorial pressure following her appointment to '60 Minutes' in January 2023. Regarding a segment on fatal shootings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis, Vega explained that editors requested she include footage of protesters attacking undercover agents. However, she and her production team found no credible examples of such incidents occurring. In another case, Vega was instructed to incorporate a statement from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey allegedly ordering police to confront ICE agents, but after reviewing "every frame" of the mayor's news conference, Vega confirmed the statement was never made.

The editorial conflicts intensified under Bari Weiss, who assumed the position of editor-in-chief at CBS News in October following her appointment by Paramount CEO David Ellison. Weiss brought no prior television experience to the role, having previously worked in opinion departments at major newspapers and co-founded a conservative-leaning media company. Vega described experiencing pressure to include administration talking points in unrelated segments, including a report on U.S.-Iran military dynamics and coverage of federal benefit cuts, where editors questioned why she had not interviewed Vice President JD Vance or referenced his memoir.

Vega's account aligns with departures of other prominent '60 Minutes' journalists. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi's contract concluded after she criticized Weiss for removing her torture investigation segment from broadcast. Scott Pelley was terminated shortly after reportedly denouncing Weiss and executive producer Nick Bilton for lacking journalism qualifications. Anderson Cooper also resigned from the program. Vega, who was fired in May at the conclusion of the show's 58th season alongside Alfonsi and senior executives Tanya Simon and Draggan Mihailovich, remained silent about the circumstances until her recent public remarks.
