Freddie Potts Completes Permanent Transfer from West Ham United to Club Brugge

West Ham United midfielder Freddie Potts has joined Belgian Pro League champions Club Brugge on a permanent transfer for approximately £10 million. The 22-year-old spent 16 years at the Hammers after joining at age six, making 28 first-team appearances before his departure.

A Lifelong Hammers Academy Product

Potts' exit marks the end of a lengthy association with West Ham's academy system. The Barking-born midfielder progressed through the club's youth ranks and made his first-team debut during the 2021-22 Europa League campaign against Dinamo Zagreb. Last season, he featured in 22 Premier League matches for the recently-relegated East London club, establishing himself as a regular in Nuno Espirito Santo's squad.

In the weeks leading up to his departure, Potts was named captain for a pre-season friendly against Southend, an honour he described as fulfilling a lifelong ambition. However, the opportunity to compete in European football with Club Brugge ultimately proved decisive in his decision to leave.

Building a Reputation Through Loan Spells

Potts' move to continental football follows two successful loan experiences that demonstrated his development as a midfielder. A season-long spell at Wycombe earned him the club's Player of the Year award, following which he secured a temporary move to Portsmouth in the Championship. Those performances convinced Club Brugge to pursue the midfielder on a permanent basis, signing him to a four-year contract.

The transfer also extends a family connection to professional football. His older brother Daniel previously won Young Hammer of the Year in 2012, while their father Steve remains a club institution—a former captain who made 506 West Ham appearances and currently serves as a first-team coach. Freddie becomes the fifth English player to represent Club Brugge, one of Belgium's most decorated institutions.
