The son of Manchester United and Chelsea legend Mark Hughes died from sudden adult death syndrome at age 38, Cheshire Coroners Court has determined. Alex Hughes was discovered at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire, on June 19 and had been serving as player recruitment lead at League Two club Grimsby Town. The inquest concluded the death resulted from natural causes linked to the condition, which affects approximately 800 individuals annually across England.

Circumstances of Death

Alex Hughes was found collapsed in his bedroom around 7 a.m. by his two sons, one of whom attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Medical professionals determined that sudden adult death syndrome—a condition typically occurring in young men—was responsible. Area coroner Victoria Davies formally concluded the death as natural causes at the hearing in Warrington.

Career and Legacy in Football

Born in 1987 while his father was contracted to Barcelona, Alex Hughes pursued a career in football administration rather than professional play, though he had brief experiences with reserve teams at Stockport County and Wrexham. He developed expertise in player analysis and recruitment, holding senior positions at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde, and Morecambe. Before joining Grimsby Town in 2025, he worked as a player agent at a private academy in Portugal for approximately a decade.

Grimsby Town manager David Artell described Hughes as humble and process-oriented, emphasizing his professionalism and kindness. "He would take everything into account, and he was just such a good guy," Artell told BBC Radio Humberside. The club released a statement characterizing Hughes as a devoted husband, proud father, and beloved family member who played an important role in the squad's development.

Sir Alex Ferguson led mourners at a service held at St Peter's Church in Prestbury, with numerous football figures attending to pay respects. Manchester United legends Bryan Robson and Ryan Giggs were present, alongside former coach Mike Phelan and ex-chairman Martin Edwards. Grimsby Town's management also attended. Hughes is survived by his wife Jessica, whom he met during their school years, and their two sons, Sebastian and Leonardo.
