Freddie Woodward Reveals Struggle with Pornography Addiction During Olympic Career

Freddie Woodward, a former Team GB diver who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has publicly disclosed that he struggled with pornography addiction throughout much of his athletic career, sometimes visiting adult websites multiple times daily. The 30-year-old athlete from Sheffield is now calling for better educational approaches to address the issue without shame-based messaging, instead advocating for strategies grounded in evidence and research.

Discovery and Escalation During Formative Years

Woodward's diving journey began at age seven when talent scouts from City of Sheffield Diving Club identified him at his primary school in Millhouses. He quickly excelled in the sport, training approximately 20 hours per week at Ponds Forge Sports Centre by secondary school while competing internationally. Around this same period, he first encountered internet pornography, and by age 12, he was regularly accessing what he describes as "hardcore" content.

As the only generation to grow up with widespread access to high-speed internet pornography, Woodward said he recognised his dependency when it began interfering with his academic responsibilities. Attempting to revise for GCSEs and A-Levels became difficult; he found himself constantly drawn toward opening adult websites instead of studying. His parents, who both remained involved in his upbringing following their separation when he was seven, appear to have been unaware of the extent of his consumption.

Peak Addiction During Athletic Success

The paradox of Woodward's experience lies in the timing: as his diving achievements accelerated, so did his pornography use. By his early twenties, he had earned a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, claimed a junior European silver medal, and realised his childhood ambition of representing Great Britain at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Yet during this period, he was visiting adult websites daily, and on at least one occasion, he accessed them 10 times in a single day.

Woodward has explained that pornography served as an emotional coping mechanism. Following difficult training sessions or poor performances, he turned to these sites as a reliable source of comfort. He also disclosed that around the same time, he began exchanging nude videos and photographs with strangers online.

Current Advocacy and Education Focus

Today, Woodward is leveraging his platform to shift the conversation around pornography addiction. He emphasises that effective education must prioritise honesty and scientific evidence rather than shame-based approaches, which he suggests often alienate those struggling with the behaviour. His public disclosure aims to encourage others facing similar challenges to seek professional help without fear of judgment.

The timing of Woodward's revelation aligns with broader policy efforts in the United Kingdom. In June, the government announced requirements for technology companies including Apple and Google to implement software designed to prevent minors from creating, transmitting, or viewing sexually explicit images on their devices. Woodward's experience highlights why such safeguards matter, particularly for young people navigating both competitive pressures and developmental vulnerabilities.
