Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust has announced a preferred location for a new Frimley Park Hospital facility, with construction scheduled to begin between 2028 and 2029. The £1.8 billion project addresses widespread structural concerns affecting approximately two-thirds of the existing building stock. The formal announcement follows independent assessments confirming the safety measures currently in place remain adequate to sustain operations beyond 2030.

The Structural Challenge

Frimley Park Hospital faces a significant infrastructure challenge stemming from the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in a substantial portion of its buildings. This material, widely used in NHS facility construction during earlier decades, demonstrates vulnerability to moisture exposure and deterioration. Rather than pursuing incremental remediation efforts, the trust determined that a complete rebuild represents the only comprehensive solution to eliminate ongoing structural risks.

Maintenance and safety work on the affected buildings will continue as a priority until the new facility becomes operational. Hospital officials have previously stated that current structural and safety interventions prove effective for maintaining service continuity during the interim period.

The Department of Health has fully funded the rebuild project, according to confirmation provided by the former Health Secretary.
