Producer Aaron Dessner, who has collaborated with Abrams since her 2021 EP This Is What It Feels Like, returns to co-write and produce the project.

The production employs fingerpicked acoustic guitar, soft percussion, and orchestral strings as signature elements. Songs like "Mews," a smoky ballad examining unnoticed relationship decline, and "The Knife," featuring breathy high notes, showcase a warmer and more grounded aesthetic than previous releases. The arrangement of "Good Reason," an airy composition in three-four time signature, exemplifies the album's softer approach to themes of romantic dissolution.

During a promotional interview, Abrams made candid remarks about her teenage years, telling radio host Jordan North that she believes she "took years" off the lives of her parents. She reflected on periods of emotional distance during her high school years, expressing regret about being "non-verbal" and withdrawn during that time. "I feel quite bad for the adults in my life," she said, adding direct apologies to both parents during the conversation.

Now 26 years old, Abrams credited her evolving perspective with allowing her to recognize the emotional burden her struggles may have caused those around her.
