Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, fatally shot his wife Amanda, 39, and their six children—ranging from 5 to 15 years old—before setting their Grand Haven Township home on fire and shooting himself. Authorities responded to a fire at the home around 11:42 a.m. on Friday after neighbors reported smoke. Ottawa County Sheriff's Captain Jake Sparks confirmed the sequence of events: all family members had been shot, then a fire was intentionally set in multiple locations throughout the residence. The violence may have begun Thursday evening, as earlier reports noted smoke detected in the area before the main emergency call.

The family consisted of four biological children and two adopted 11-year-old girls. Their family pets also did not survive the fire and smoke. Investigators determined Karolkiewicz used a registered handgun in the attack, though a recovered firearm has not yet been confirmed from the fire-damaged residence.
